Published by the East Turkistan Human Rights Watch (ETHR), Women’s Report 2023 is a comprehensive human rights study focusing on the impact of the Chinese government’s repressive policies in East Turkistan on women. These practices demonstrate that violations against women cannot be separated from broader policies aimed at reshaping the cultural and social fabric of East Turkistan.
The religious and cultural identities of women in East Turkistan also constitute another dimension of repression. Restrictions on headscarves, traditional clothing, and other religious and cultural expressions limit women’s ability to freely express their identities. In this sense, policies targeting women affect not only physical liberty and bodily integrity, but also interconnected rights related to religion, culture, family life, and social belonging.
Women’s Report 2023 is an important study that seeks to make the human rights crisis in East Turkistan more visible through the experiences of women. It emphasizes that abuses against women should not be regarded as isolated incidents, but rather as components of a broader system of repression and social control. Through documenting these violations, the report contributes to informing the international community and strengthening the women’s rights perspective within discussions on the human rights situation in East Turkistan.
